Denver’s Flavored Vape Ban: What Customers Near Glendale Should Know
If you’ve recently tried to find flavored vape products in Denver, you may have noticed a major change.
In December 2024, the Denver City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting the sale of most flavored tobacco and nicotine products within the City and County of Denver. The measure passed the City Council by an 11–1 vote on December 16, 2024, and was signed by Mayor Mike Johnston on December 18, 2024.
The restrictions cover products such as flavored e-cigarettes, flavored vape products and e-liquids, menthol cigarettes, and a variety of other flavored nicotine products.
The Important Part: The Ban Is Specific to Denver
One point that can be confusing is that the law applies specifically within the City and County of Denver.
Our store is located in Glendale, Colorado, in Arapahoe County. Although Glendale is surrounded by Denver and is only minutes away from many Denver neighborhoods, it is its own municipality and is not part of the City and County of Denver.
That distinction matters because Denver’s ordinance governs retailers located within Denver’s jurisdiction.
Why Are Flavored Products Banned in Denver?
Supporters of Denver’s ordinance argued that flavored nicotine and tobacco products contribute to youth nicotine use and that restricting flavored products would reduce their accessibility.
The ordinance also faced opposition from local retailers and others who argued that adult customers would simply travel to neighboring municipalities where the products remain legal to sell, potentially shifting business away from Denver rather than eliminating demand.
Regardless of the debate surrounding the policy, Denver retailers are now required to follow the city’s flavored-product restrictions.
Glendale Is Not Denver
Because Glendale is geographically surrounded by Denver, it’s easy to assume that Denver laws automatically apply here. They don’t.
Glendale operates under its own municipal jurisdiction within Arapahoe County. Customers should therefore be aware that rules governing tobacco and nicotine sales can change simply by crossing from one municipality into another.
Our store continues to operate in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable to our Glendale location, including all applicable age-verification requirements.
Staying Informed
Colorado’s tobacco and nicotine regulations continue to evolve at both the state and local levels. Different cities and counties may have different restrictions, so customers and retailers should always check the rules applicable to their specific location.
For adults who use nicotine products, understanding these jurisdictional differences is especially important now that regulations can vary significantly throughout the Denver metro area.
Adults 21+ only. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
